Strength of schedule:
LSU is (3-2) with wins over BYU, Chattanooga, and Syracuse. They were defeated by Mississippi State and Troy. Florida is (3-1) with wins over Tennessee, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt. Their lone defeat came against Michigan.
LSU is coming off a completely embarrassing 24-21 loss at the hands of Troy and angry fans are calling for Ed Orgeron’s job. LSU actually outgained Troy 428-326 in total yardage but were killed in time of possession. Danny Etling was 17-25 for 198 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Tigers totaled 162 rushing yards on 29 carries. Four turnovers by the LSU offense was their ultimate undoing. The normally staunch Tigers defense was gashed for 206 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. LSU ranks 67th in total yardage (409.0) and 83rd in points per game (27.0). The Tigers rank 31st in scoring defense (19.4).
Florida was able to defeat Vanderbilt at home by a final score of 38-24. Florida outgained Vanderbilt Iowa 467-310 in total yardage. Florida’s starting quarterback Luke Del Rio sustained a season ending injury in the victory over Vanderbilt. Backup quarterback Feleipe Franks was 10-14 for 185 yards in his absence. The Gators running game had a field day combining for 218 yards and five touchdowns on 51 carries. Florida’s leading receiver Tyrie Cleveland suffered an injury and is questionable for the game against LSU. Florida ranks 98th in total offense (359.0 YPG) and 81st in points per game (27.3). The Gators rank 69th in scoring defense (26.0 PPG).
LSU was without their star running back Derrius Guice against Troy and his presence was surely missed. The Tigers are banged up along the offensive line which was a disaster last week. Florida’s offense has struggled to score points all year and they are now without their starting quarterback and possibly their best receiver. LSU is typically known for their great defense but they have allowed 29.0 PPG in their last three. I think LSU will cover the spread but Florida wins by a field goal at home.
