On Thursday, August 3rd, the (0-0) Arizona Cardinals will take on the (0-0) Dallas Cowboys in the preseason opening Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.
2016-17 Statistics (32 total teams):
Yards per game: Cowboys 376.7 (5th) > Cardinals 366.8 (9th)
Points per game: Cowboys 26.3 (5th) > Cardinals 26.1 (6th)
Turnover margin: Cowboys +5 > Cardinals 0
Fewest yards allowed per game: Cardinals 305.2 (2nd) > Cowboys 343.9 (14th)
Fewest Points allowed per game: Cowboys 19.1 (5th) > Cardinals 22.6 (14th)
Dallas won the NFC East with an (13-3) record in the regular season but were knocked off 34-31 by the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs. Arizona finished with a (7-8-1) record last season which was good for second place in the NFC West. The Cowboys (+115) were 3rd in the league in point differential while the Cardinals (+56) ranked 7th. Dallas had one of the league’s most prolific offenses (26.3 PPG) led by star rookies Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott. Elliott has been all over the news this offseason and is likely to be suspended for a myriad of incidents. Without Elliott more pressure will be on the shoulders of Dak Prescott but he has the benefit of playmakers and a great offensive line. The underrated Cowboys defense only allowed 19.1 points per game. Dallas went heavy on defense in the draft and a healthy Jaylon Smith could go a long way to improving that side of the ball.
The Cardinals offense averaged 26.1 points per game last season which ranked 6th in the league. Carson Palmer took a step back from his excellent 2015 campaign but still threw for 4,233 yards and 26 touchdowns. Running back David Johnson proved why he is one of the best players in the league with over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 20 total touchdowns. Arizona’s offense as a whole needs to do a better job of ball security. The Cardinals defense will certainly miss safety Tony Jefferson who was arguably their best player on that side of the ball last season. Injuries limited Tyronn Mathieu to only 10 games last year so his healthy return along with promising draftees Budda Baker and Hassan Reddick could make for a much improved unit.
